KEY CONCEPT #1
User Created Content
User created content refers to, “sites such as blogs, practices such as citizen journalism, and platforms such as YouTube, where users are empowered to become creators and distributors of digital content.” (Flew, 34)
User created content could be the most important concept related to this industry and likewise responsible for the birth of the digital fitness industry.
Because of user created platforms like YouTube and blogs like word press, fitness industry amateurs can easily build the bridge to professional by sharing their stories, videos and experiences.
This concept allows unprecedented opportunities for an unknown subject to a globally expand their brand by the simplicity of a keystroke.
All three leaders and the rest of the industry rely on the concept of user created content.
Jean Baudrillard articulates the fitness model/ social media profile in one word; simulacra. Simulacra is Something that replaces reality with its representation , a simulation. “”Simulation no longer that of a territory, a referential being, or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal…. It is no longer a question of imitation, nor duplication, nor even parody. It is a question of substituting the signs of the real for the real” (1-2). As Baudrillad plainly states, “simulating is not pretending,” but bears no relation to reality whatsoever.
Simulation vs Representation
There you have it—simulation is totally opposite of representation, OK? Representation starts from the idea that a sign of something can communicate how real that something is. This idea is fucking retarded, but at least it’s kind of honest. Simulation, on the other hand, takes that silly and goofy idea of the two being equal as its starting point but doesn’t even give a shit if that real something ever existed in the first place. Sadly the entire new media fitness industry as a whole has no relation to reality whatsoever rather it is all-hyper real. With the introduction of filters, computer generated images, and Photoshop anyone can appear to be a #INSTAmodel. Participating in the hyperreality this industry has become remains the only way to be successful.
